TROILUS AND CRESSIDA
A Bold New Adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play
THEATRE OF THE NO
Theatre of the NO, Athens' first English-speaking theatre, presents a daring new adaptation "Troilus and Cressida", William Shakespeare’s most subversive tale of war, love, and betrayal. Set during the Trojan War, the play defies easy categorization part tragedy, part satire, exposing the absurdity of heroism and the fragility of human ideals.
This immersive production unfolds in a bar-theatre, where actors move among the audience, breaking traditional stage barriers. Premiering on Saturday 29th March, the production will run every Saturday and Sunday at 19:30.
About the Play
Nine years into the Trojan War, the Greeks offer peace: return Helen, and they will leave. But King Priam refuses, demanding a duel instead. Meanwhile, his son Troilus loves Cressida, and Priam hopes war will shape him into a hero. When Cressida is sent to the Greek camp, alliances shift, and Odysseus manipulates Achilles into battle. A tragic duel, betrayal, and shattered ideals follow, exposing the hypocrisy of war and the cost of love. Troilus and Cressida dismantles the myths of heroism, revealing war’s absurdity and inevitable disillusionment.
Director’s Note:Honoring Shakespeare by Dishonoring Him
«Troilus & Cressida» was never meant to be comfortable. Shakespeare wrote for the common man as much as for the elite, crafting plays that were performed in a chaotic, interactive environment not preserved in an academic vacuum. This production strips the play down to its essentials, reimagining it for a cast of five, making the entire Trojan War unfold through the love story of its doomed protagonists.
By keeping Shakespeare’s essence but reshaping its form, Troilus and Cressida becomes not a relic of the past, but a living, breathing commentary on human ideals ones that still falter when tested by war, ambition, and desire. This is Shakespeare as he should be: accessible, immediate, and, above all, exhilarating.
